Westley & Hank

We’re Hank and Westley. We’re two guys who do a lot of stuff together. Westley started Working Dog in 2024 after pivoting from bartending, to construction, to being laid off. So with his pickup truck that’s as old and hardworking as he is, he set off to create a job for himself that offered balance and service to folks around him. After a year of putting in the sweat and elbow grease by himself, he decided it was time to phone a friend and take Working Dog to a new level, and that’s where Hank came in. Hank is a former-suit-turned-working-dog, who now handles the administrative and business side of things here at WDM. Together, we’re aiming to turn Working Dog into a company that serves our communities in and around Portland in a way that is responsible, authentic, and accessible. We take pride in showing up with care, humor, and a deep respect for the work—whatever the work may be. We’re building something steady, thoughtful, and rooted in connection.

our MISSION

Working Dog’s mission is to provide accessible maintenance services to renters, homeowners, businesses, and anybody else who can’t or doesn’t want to take on these projects themselves. We strive to ensure that our services are accessible to our clients not only financially, but also in ease of communication, as we value building authentic, collaborative relationships with everyone we work with. As our hope is always to maintain ongoing partnerships, we are also committed to education and self-empowerment for our clients - we’re happy to teach you everything we know so you can make informed decisions about how to take care of your space moving forward.

OUR Values

Responsibility
We take care of what we say we’ll do. We believe in being accountable, and taking care of areas that are ours to do so in.

Authenticity
We show up as our full selves and hope for others to do the same. We’re just doing what we can, when we can — and we’ll be honest about our capacity.

Accessibility
Everyone deserves to be included. We work to remove barriers in the spaces and systems we’re part of, knowing there’s always more to learn and do.

Service
Through skill & resource sharing, and by offering care, listening, and showing up when asked a reasonable request.

Education
We share what we know because knowledge should be collective.

Bucket, a tan and white dog in a red harness, sitting on a sunny sidewalk and looking back over his shoulder.

Bucket

Bucket is a full-grown baby pit bull, but you might mistake him for a little piggie sometimes. The newest of the crew, this guy had a rough start — he and his brothers were rescued by Stumptown Strays after being found living on their lonesome in Pier Park. One year and one foster placement later, though, Bucket is now the third pet in the pack at Westley and Samuel’s house with full reign of the couch and every treat he could ever want. Bucket’s favorite pastimes include being nervous, crunching lamb lung, shredding celery, being shredded, napping, and morning zoomies. For how much time he spends on the couch under a blankie, no one quite understands why he’s built like a powerlifter. Bucket’s enthusiasm for snoozing and bulking remind the Working Dog team of the importance of a healthy work/life balance. Maybe one day he’ll get a real job, but, for right now, someone has to make sure the couch doesn’t go anywhere.

Molly - a black scruffy terrier - smiling with a bin full of yellow and blue tennis balls

molly

Molly is a wiry terrier with a big personality and an even bigger heart. She was adopted as a puppy after being rescued from a junkyard in California, where she was found alongside her mom and siblings. Named in honor of two fierce and beloved Texans — journalist Molly Ivins and former governor Ann Richards — Molly lives up to her namesakes every day with her bold spirit and scrappy charm. Weighing in at about 35 pounds, she’s all scruff, sass, and soulful eyes. Molly is a socially anxious lesbian who loves people more than anything — though you might not guess it by how fast she runs in the opposite direction. She has strong opinions about skateboards (hates them) and an unrelenting obsession with her brother’s wet cat food (loves it). Since Hank joined the team, Molly’s been a constant presence at Working Dog, where she brings the chaotic good energy, fierce loyalty, and endless heart.

Branca, a black, brown, and white (but mostly black) dog lays in a hole he dug in the sand.

Branca

Branca is a five-year-old Husky/Australian Shepherd mix, so it will come as no surprise that he was born in Sacramento, California. You could call him the Walmart special. There is no mistaking that Branca is 110% dog all of the time. Some of his favorite things are digging holes in the yard and laying in them, Samuel, his Uncle Hank, and making his grown ups open the door for him to go outside so he can make them open the door again to let him inside so he can make them open the door again to let him outside. He works and sighs like he has bills to pay, but he’s never filled out a W4 in his life. Fucker’s a homosexual pisces who’s working through his codependency issues and the ADHD that he inherited from his dad Westley. All that to say, he’s the hardest working dog on the team, and he’s up for any job. Branca reminds the team often that you can’t get the work done unless you go outside, then go back inside for what you forgot, then go outside again to finish the job.
